LA's Latest Art Exhibition: Julia Stoschek's Video Collection Captivates Audiences

"No white cubes! No black boxes!" exclaimed Udo Kittelmann during his guided tour of "What a Wonderful World: An Audiovisual Poem," an innovative exhibition he curated at the historic Variety Arts Theater in Los Angeles. This unique venue has transformed into a vibrant showcase for pieces from Julia Stoschek, a renowned collector celebrated for her focus on time-based media.

The exhibition features 45 diverse artworks from an impressive array of international artists, including Marina Abramović, Doug Aitken, and Paul Chan. These works span various settings, from grand theaters to intimate spaces, creating a dynamic experience for visitors.

Stoschek's collection, overseen by her foundation since 2002, boasts over 1,000 pieces by 300 artists, highlighting mediums such as video, film, and virtual reality. This exhibition marks its debut in the United States, coinciding with the recent Frieze LA art fair.

Kittelmann, a former museum director, has curated the exhibition to resonate with LA's cinematic heritage, incorporating early cinema classics alongside contemporary works. He encourages visitors to embrace the experience, stating, "It's not an exhibition, and I'm not a curator. It's a poem." This approach invites a sense of exploration without the constraints of traditional viewing expectations.

Open from 5 p.m. to midnight, the exhibition offers free admission and complimentary popcorn, allowing attendees to wander freely and engage with the art at their own pace. Kittelmann's unconventional choice to allow soundtracks to overlap creates an immersive atmosphere, enhancing the experience without the usual constraints of silence in galleries.

The Variety Arts Theater itself, a Venetian-style landmark, has a rich history of hosting diverse events, making it an ideal backdrop for this eclectic exhibition. The space, although a bit worn, adds an edgy charm that complements the artworks displayed.

The title of the exhibition references the iconic Louis Armstrong song, reflecting a connection to contemporary societal themes. Kittelmann believes the show captures the current zeitgeist, echoing sentiments of social and cultural upheaval.

Among the standout pieces is Arthur Jafa's compelling work, "Apex," which juxtaposes vibrant imagery with a powerful soundtrack, challenging viewers to confront complex narratives. Similarly, Lu Yang's project, "DOKU The Flow," employs cutting-edge technology to explore themes of identity and selfhood.

Overall, "What a Wonderful World" serves as a profound commentary on the human experience, blending humor, poignancy, and thought-provoking visuals. As Stoschek aims to encapsulate the cultural shifts of her generation, the exhibition promises to inspire future dialogues in the art world.

"What a Wonderful World: An Audiovisual Poem" will be on display at the Variety Arts Theater in Los Angeles until March 20, 2026.
