LACMA and Erewhon Turn Alexander Calder's Art Into a Cultural Café Experience

LACMA's permanent Erewhon café pairs Alexander Calder-inspired flavors, design and retail with a new social experience inside the David Geffen Galleries.

LACMA and Erewhon Turn Alexander Calder's Art Into a Cultural Café Experience

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art has made its Erewhon pop-up a permanent café within the new David Geffen Galleries, bringing together contemporary museum culture, wellness-inspired food and Los Angeles lifestyle.

Situated beneath Peter Zumthor's expansive new building, the café looks toward Alexander Calder's restored 1964 fountain, Three Quintains (Hello Girls). The kinetic work has also informed a new capsule apparel collection and a dedicated LACMA smoothie.

Art-inspired flavor and design

The signature drink combines organic mango, mandarin, pineapple and strawberry with lion's mane. Its gray-toned base and colorful accents reference Calder's playful visual language while echoing the material palette of the museum's architecture.

LACMA says the collaboration connects two organizations closely associated with Los Angeles culture. Beyond refreshments, the café is designed as a relaxed meeting point for visitors exploring the museum's collection and new galleries.

The project reflects a growing movement among cultural institutions to create experiences that extend beyond exhibition spaces. By translating visual art into food, retail and social settings, museums can offer new entry points for audiences to engage with creative ideas in everyday life.

As museums continue to blend art, design and lifestyle, collaborations such as LACMA and Erewhon's may help cultural spaces become more interactive, accessible and connected to how visitors spend their time.
