Judy Baca's Great Wall of Los Angeles Expands at the Skirball

The Skirball Cultural Center will present The 1960s -- A Generation on Fire: Judy Baca's Great Wall of Los Angeles, an exhibition featuring newly completed mural sections about the decade.

Baca first conceived the Great Wall in 1974 as a public monument tracing California's history and the experiences of its diverse communities. In 1976, she co-founded the Social and Public Art Resource Center (SPARC). Working with young people, artists, historians, and community members, the team began painting the mural along the Los Angeles River. The project has continued to grow beyond its original account of events through the 1950s.

The exhibition focuses on the 1960s, a period shaped by the Civil Rights Movement, peaceful protest, and cultural change. Visitors will also be invited to contribute personal histories through the MuralMemoirs interactive component.

The exhibition runs from October 2026 through February 2027, with sections revealed at different points during its run. By extending the mural's account of the past, the project may help future audiences engage with California history as an evolving, shared story.
