Instagram Expands Edits to Mac With Advanced Video Tools

Edits moves from mobile to desktop

Instagram is bringing its short-form video editor, Edits, to Mac, giving creators a larger workspace for more involved projects. The desktop app adds a multitrack timeline, keyframes, audio waveforms and customizable keyboard shortcuts.

Creators can use licensed and royalty-free music, sound and video effects, plus automatic captions in multiple languages. Saved audio and text styles sync from the mobile app, and users can import their own fonts.

The editor supports both horizontal and vertical video, and exports clips in 4K without a watermark. Users can also publish directly to Instagram from desktop, with tagging and location features available in the workflow.

The expansion puts Edits in closer competition with CapCut, which has offered desktop editing for Windows and Mac. Instagram says it plans weekly updates and is working toward smoother editing of the same project across desktop and mobile. The company also says more than 50 million creators use the mobile app.

Bringing editing and publishing together across devices could make increasingly ambitious video projects easier to produce and share.
