India's mobile app economy is entering a new phase: users are no longer only downloading apps, they are increasingly paying for them. A recent Sensor Tower report shows consumer spending in India's app market reached a record $345 million in the second quarter, up 35% year over year.
The strongest momentum is coming from generative AI, streaming, and productivity apps, signaling a broader shift away from gaming-led growth. As digital subscriptions become more familiar, Indian users are showing greater openness to premium features and recurring payments.
Downloads remain massive at around 6.3 billion per quarter, but monetization is improving steadily. Revenue per download has more than doubled over the past three and a half years, reflecting the impact of wider digital payment adoption and smoother in-app purchase flows.
According to Sensor Tower, India also posted the fastest app revenue growth among major markets in the latest quarter. In the same period, non-gaming apps accounted for 68% of total mobile app revenue in the first half of 2026, up from 58% three years earlier.
Subscription platforms are benefiting most from this shift. Google One became the top-grossing mobile app in India during the quarter, while services such as Amazon Prime Video, Crunchyroll, Sony LIV, and JioHotstar also saw stronger consumer spending. In AI, ChatGPT and Claude together represented nearly 83% of India's AI app revenue in Q2.
Appfigures also notes continued growth in subscriptions, even as the early AI surge cools. The broader trend suggests India is moving from a download-first market to one defined by digital value creation. Over time, this could make the country one of the most influential premium app markets in the global digital economy.
