How HSA and FSA Funds May Cover Fitness Trackers and Home Gym Gear

Fitness trackers, smartwatches and home workout gear may qualify for HSA or FSA spending when a clinician confirms medical need, but rules vary by plan and product.

How HSA and FSA Funds May Cover Fitness Trackers and Home Gym Gear

Fitness trackers, smartwatches and home exercise equipment may be eligible for purchase with Health Savings Account (HSA) or Flexible Spending Account (FSA) funds--but eligibility depends on medical need, not simply the product's wellness features.

Medical necessity is key

Under IRS guidelines, an item generally needs to treat or monitor a specific health condition to qualify as a medical expense. A Letter of Medical Necessity from a licensed clinician may be required to support the purchase. The letter typically applies to the individual, a particular product and a stated health concern; it does not guarantee that an account administrator will approve the claim.

That means a wearable used to track heart rate, sleep or recovery could qualify when it relates to a relevant medical need, while the same device might not qualify for general fitness tracking alone. Brands including WHOOP, Oura, COROS and Amazfit offer products that may be considered through medical-necessity processes. Some retailers provide eligibility screening during checkout, but customers should check their plan's requirements before buying.

Equipment may also qualify

Home fitness gear, such as weights or other exercise equipment, may be eligible when a clinician identifies structured exercise as part of a treatment plan. As with wearables, approval depends on the person's circumstances and the rules of their HSA or FSA administrator.

FSA rules can differ from HSA rules, and some FSA plans require account holders to spend funds by a deadline. Confirm the deadline and documentation requirements directly with the plan administrator. Medical need--not a product's marketing label--determines eligibility.

As health technology becomes more closely connected to personalized care, clearer eligibility guidance could help people use these tools as part of evidence-informed health management.
