Google's SynthID Detector Brings AI Content Verification to More Users

Google's SynthID Detector helps users check images, video and audio for invisible AI watermarks, adding a practical layer of transparency to digital media.

Google's SynthID Detector Brings AI Content Verification to More Users

As generative AI becomes part of everyday digital creation, identifying how a piece of media was produced is gaining importance. Google has introduced SynthID Detector, a web-based tool designed to check whether images, video or audio contain a SynthID watermark.

The system supports a broad range of common media formats, including JPG, PNG, WEBP, MP4, MOV, MP3 and WAV. Users sign in with a Google account, upload a file and receive an assessment of whether it includes a watermark associated with supported AI creation tools.

A watermark embedded into media

Rather than relying on visible labels or file metadata, SynthID is embedded within the media itself. For images and video, it is integrated into pixel-level content; for audio, it is incorporated into frequency patterns. The watermark is intended to remain undetectable to people while being readable by verification systems.

Google says the technology is designed to withstand everyday edits such as cropping, color adjustments, light blurring and some stylistic changes. This means an AI-generated file can still be identified after many standard editing processes.

Useful signals, not absolute answers

The detector is most reliable when examining high-quality, original files containing a substantial amount of AI-generated material. Major transformations, heavy pixelation or composites that blend a small AI-created element into predominantly original material may reduce detection accuracy.

Importantly, the tool does not determine whether every file was made with AI. Instead, it searches specifically for the SynthID watermark. A result showing no watermark should therefore be understood as an indication that SynthID was not found, rather than a universal confirmation of authenticity.

The platform also applies daily upload limits across image, video and audio checks. Despite its boundaries, SynthID Detector offers a practical new layer of transparency for creators, publishers and audiences navigating AI-enhanced media.

As watermarking standards expand across creative tools, systems like SynthID could help build a future where digital content carries clearer, more trustworthy information about its origins.
