Google Photos is more than a simple gallery app. With a few smart adjustments, users can improve storage efficiency, refine what appears in Memories, and tailor backup behavior to fit their routine.
Smarter storage, cleaner library
One of the most practical options is Storage Saver, which reduces file size for new uploads while keeping a solid visual quality. For accounts that are already close to their cloud limit, Google Photos also offers a Recover Storage tool that compresses previously uploaded media to help free up space.
More control over backup and privacy
On Android, Google Photos can back up more than the camera roll. Users can choose specific device folders, such as Downloads or messaging app media, and exclude the ones they do not want synced. The app also lets users manage Memories by hiding selected faces, making the experience more personal and relevant.
For sensitive files, the Locked Folder adds an extra layer of protection. A useful setting now allows those items to be backed up securely while staying inside the protected folder structure across devices.
Search and export options
Google Photos also includes tools to organize large libraries more efficiently. The storage manager highlights blurry images, duplicate files, screenshots, and oversized videos, making cleanup faster. Users can also empty the Bin to permanently remove deleted items and reclaim space immediately.
For those who prefer a more classic search experience, the Ask Photos feature can be turned off in Gemini settings. And for long-term archiving, Google Takeout now supports incremental exports, so only newly added or updated photos are downloaded in future backups.
