Google is preparing to phase out Google Assistant on Android, marking a major shift in its mobile AI strategy. The company has been steering users toward Gemini since 2024, and now it has set a clear timeline for the transition.
Shutdown begins on September 4
According to Google's latest notice, the removal process will start on Friday, Sept. 4, with access to Google Assistant gradually disappearing from devices over the following weeks. Some users may still see it briefly into September, but the change is expected to reach most Android devices soon after rollout begins.
The update is not limited to smartphones and tablets. Google says the legacy assistant will also be retired on Wear OS watches, headphones, and Android Auto when those features depend on a connected phone. Cars with Google built-in will continue to support Google Assistant for now.
What remains available
Google TV devices, along with Google Home speakers and smart displays, still support Google Assistant at this stage. In some cases, however, switching to Gemini may be a one-way move, meaning users may not be able to return to the older assistant afterward.
This transition reflects Google's broader push toward a more advanced AI experience, and it may shape how everyday voice interaction evolves across connected devices in the years ahead.
