Apple has introduced a new developer toolkit that allows automakers to build Apple Maps directly into vehicle infotainment systems. The first rollout will arrive with Ford's next-generation electric vehicles, beginning with a midsize truck planned for 2027.
Ford is building this new EV lineup on a universal platform designed to support multiple body styles over time, including a sedan, crossover, three-row SUV and compact commercial vans. The company says the goal is to combine affordability, efficiency and advanced digital features in one flexible architecture.
Smarter navigation for electric driving
With the new in-car mapping setup, drivers will get route guidance tailored for EV use, including efficient charging-aware navigation and natural-language directions. The system will also provide live traffic details, destination search and richer place information, all running natively inside the vehicle rather than through phone mirroring.
The integration is expected to support Ford's next-generation BlueCruise hands-free driving system by supplying road-level map data. Ford says the upgraded version could eventually cover more of a highway journey, while the broader roadmap points toward more advanced autonomous capabilities in the years ahead.
Apple Maps data will also help with battery preconditioning, preparing the battery before a charging stop to improve charging efficiency. Ford says the same platform could later support connected-home features and fleet tools for Ford Pro, such as route planning for work vehicles and better visibility across commercial operations.
As automakers and software platforms become more tightly connected, this kind of native integration could shape a more intelligent, seamless future for electric mobility.
