Figma is expanding its support for the open-source Model Context Protocol (MCP), announcing 20 new partners at its first Config conference in India. The additions include ClickUp, JetBrains' Junie, Linear, Mistral, Notion and Sarvam Agents.
The move comes as co-founder Dylan Field voices reservations about MCP's design. He said Figma is keen to open its ecosystem, but believes the protocol has significant room to improve and currently favors frontier AI labs. Field also supports users who want to connect AI tools with their Figma data.
Balancing openness with safeguards
Field has questioned whether the protocol enables balanced sharing of context and resources across platforms. He also acknowledged that making more Figma data available through MCP could increase the potential for misuse. While most users may have constructive intentions, the company must account for possible risks as it broadens access.
Figma's approach reflects a wider challenge for AI toolmakers: creating open connections while maintaining control over how data is accessed. As MCP integrations grow, clearer standards and safeguards could shape how people connect design platforms with AI services.
