What defines the completion of a painting? This question often puzzles artists, and during a recent dialogue in his Brooklyn studio, Archie Rand provided a glimpse into his creative process. As he stood before a half-finished canvas featuring a street vendor and two curious children, he emphasized the significance of the scene's background--a striking crimson sky.
"This, right here," he pointed to the intersection of the building and sky, "is the most crucial part." Rand expressed a desire to explore the narratives within his art, asking, "What's around the corner? Where do these characters come from?" He believes that the essence of a painting lies in its ability to evoke questions and curiosity, and only then can he set down his brush.
In his expansive studio in Clinton Hill, Rand has cultivated an environment that reflects his artistic journey. Spanning 50 feet wide and 100 feet long, the space is filled with rows of canvases, both finished and in progress. The studio, adorned with jazz and classical music collections, serves as a sanctuary for his creativity.
Currently, Rand's exhibition at Jarvis Art showcases a series titled "Heads," featuring vibrant works that seem to leap from a child's vivid imagination. One painting captures a boy playing the trumpet in a whimsical floral chair, while another, titled Duck (2025), depicts two children navigating a tumultuous sea aboard a catboat. This narrative style invites viewers to engage with the artwork and imagine the unfolding story.
Max Werner, co-curator of the show, reflects on Rand's unique vision, noting how his work stands apart in today's art landscape. "Archie's not riffing. He moves according to his own path," he remarked, highlighting Rand's ability to create art that feels fresh and original amidst a sea of derivative works.
Rand's artistic evolution began in Brooklyn, where he first studied at the Art Students League and later at Pratt. His early influences included storytelling through comics, leading him to exhibit his work at a young age. His encounter with Philip Guston, who transitioned from Abstract Expressionism to figurative art, profoundly impacted Rand's perspective on creativity and artistic identity.
Now, at 77, Rand continues to work daily, often accompanied by the sounds of Brahms or Dolphy. He embraces the uncertainty of his legacy, stating, "My problem is not to ensure my future or gain posthumous fame." Instead, he finds fulfillment in creating art that resonates with viewers today.
