The Brooklyn Public Library has introduced its first lending program dedicated to craft supplies, expanding the idea of what a modern library can offer. Launched on September 9, the new collection includes 31 rentable items such as crochet hooks, thermal laminators, button makers, linocut kits, woodworking tools, and a fourth-edition Cricut Maker.
Adult cardholders can borrow up to three craft kits for three weeks and two tools for one week, all at no cost. The initiative is designed to make creative hobbies more accessible by reducing the upfront expense of specialized equipment and giving people a low-risk way to explore new skills.
According to library staff, the project builds on the institution's broader Library of Things model, which already includes non-book items such as vinyl records, culture passes, and musical instruments. The craft collection was developed by librarian Jessica Harwick, who said the goal is to help more people try creative work without needing to buy everything first.
The launch also coincides with the reopening of the renovated Arts & Music space at the Central Library on Grand Army Plaza. Designed by Toshiko Mori Architects, the updated floor now includes the craft library, a teen center, and the Eastern Parkway Collection Wing, which focuses on art and music books.
As the collection grows, the public is invited to donate gently used tools and supplies for review. The project reflects a wider shift in libraries toward shared access, creative learning, and community-based resources. In the future, this model could inspire more public spaces to become hubs for hands-on creativity and inclusive cultural access.
