Etsy Integrates App into ChatGPT, Elevating Shopping Experience

Etsy has officially launched its native app within ChatGPT, marking a significant step in enhancing the shopping experience for its users. This innovative feature allows shoppers to navigate Etsy's extensive catalog of over 100 million listings using natural language rather than traditional keyword searches.

Instead of entering specific terms like "wooden coffee table," users can now articulate their needs more conversationally, such as, "Help me find a Mother's Day gift under $100 for my mom who loves gardening." This shift aims to streamline the shopping process and make it more intuitive.

Currently in beta, the feature enables users to mention @Etsy directly within their prompts. The app responds by displaying relevant product listings that can be browsed, compared, and linked directly to Etsy for further details or purchases.

This is not Etsy's first venture into the ChatGPT ecosystem. In September, the platform collaborated with ChatGPT on the Instant Checkout feature, which allowed users to purchase items directly within the chat interface. However, that initiative concluded in March, indicating it did not meet expectations for sales volume, prompting Etsy to develop a dedicated app instead.

In conjunction with this launch, Etsy is also testing a conversational search tool on its platform aimed at enhancing gift discovery. This gift assistant functions as a virtual personal shopper, guiding users through preferences to find suitable gift ideas.

This development is part of Etsy's broader strategy to integrate artificial intelligence into its operations. The company has introduced an AI-powered discovery experience that features curated collections and tools for sellers, such as a product title generator and a writing assistant for customer communication. Additionally, Etsy has implemented a "Designed" label to identify AI-generated content, promoting transparency as AI artwork becomes more common on its platform.

Recently, Etsy reported its Q1 2026 earnings, exceeding revenue expectations at $631 million, with a 6% increase in marketplace gross merchandise sales year-over-year. The number of active buyers rose for the first time in two years to 86.6 million, alongside 5.6 million active sellers.

In February, Etsy announced the sale of Depop to eBay for $1.2 billion, a strategic move to focus on its core marketplace.

Etsy's integration into ChatGPT joins a growing trend of companies developing native apps within the platform, including Angi, SeatGeek, Tubi, and Wix. Since October, developers have had the opportunity to create apps within the chatbot, further expanding the capabilities of AI in everyday applications.
