Environmental activist Erin Brockovich has embarked on a new initiative aimed at enhancing transparency regarding the construction of data centers and their effects on local communities. Known for her pivotal role in a landmark legal case against Pacific Gas & Electric, which was depicted in a film starring Julia Roberts, Brockovich is now focusing on the often-overlooked implications of data centers.
Recently, she introduced a website featuring a map that tracks data centers across the United States. This interactive tool is described as a "work in progress," incorporating data centers reported by local residents. In a recent Substack post, Brockovich revealed that after soliciting feedback on data center-related concerns in April, she received nearly 4,000 submissions within the first month.
Among the various issues raised, the most prevalent concern highlighted by respondents is the need for greater transparency. Brockovich noted that this single word emerged repeatedly in the submissions, surpassing other issues such as noise, water consumption, and rising utility costs.
Importantly, Brockovich clarified that her campaign is not a blanket opposition to data centers or artificial intelligence. Instead, she is drawing attention to a troubling trend indicated by her map: projects often announced after permits are already in place, developers who are unresponsive to community inquiries, and local officials who have signed non-disclosure agreements before informing residents about potential developments.
This push for transparency aims to empower communities by ensuring they are informed and engaged in the decisions that impact their neighborhoods. As the digital landscape continues to evolve, Brockovich's efforts could pave the way for a more accountable and community-oriented approach to data center development.
