DuckDuckGo Adds Built-In YouTube Ad Blocking

DuckDuckGo now blocks most YouTube video ads by default, bringing built-in ad blocking to its browser on iOS, Windows, Mac, and soon Android.

DuckDuckGo Adds Built-In YouTube Ad Blocking

DuckDuckGo has expanded its browser's privacy tools with a new feature that can block most YouTube video ads, including pre-roll and mid-roll placements. The update marks a notable step for users who want a cleaner viewing experience without changing their usual browsing habits.

Ad blocking now reaches video

According to the company, the browser already filtered intrusive ads and pop-ups, but this is the first time it has added support for video ad blocking. The feature is enabled by default for most users on iOS, Windows, and Mac, while Android users currently need to turn it on manually. DuckDuckGo says the setting will soon be automatic on Android as well.

How it works

The browser uses filter lists from uBlock Origin to identify and block ad content. DuckDuckGo notes that videos may take a little longer to begin loading, but playback should continue smoothly once the content is ready. Users can also switch the feature off at any time if they want to support creators through ad viewing.

To check the setting, users can update to the latest version of DuckDuckGo and open Settings > Ad Blocking. The feature works only when YouTube is opened directly inside the DuckDuckGo app or browser, rather than being redirected to the standalone YouTube app.

This update reflects the growing role of privacy-focused browsers in shaping how people experience online video, and it may influence the next generation of ad-blocking design.
