Dia Art Foundation and the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia will present a two-part exhibition of Indigenous Australian artist d harding's work in New York and Sydney. The Dia Chelsea presentation is scheduled to open in February 2027, followed by the Sydney exhibition in March. Both are planned to run through August.
Drawing on visits to Dia's Land art sites in the American West and rock-art galleries on their ancestral Country in Central Queensland, harding explores how knowledge and history travel through materials, techniques and place.
A new Dia commission will feature "transfer paintings" made using canvases inherited from fellow artist Gordon Bennett. Harding will treat the canvases with earthen materials and transfer them onto 60 panels, each evoking a place with a strong sense of identity.
The MCA Australia presentation will be harding's first museum survey. Organized around inheritance, visitation, embodiment and continuity, it will include an expanded version of the wall composition Know them in correct judgement (2026), developed with extended family members in consideration of their inheritance of rock art.
By bringing the exhibitions together across two continents, the project places Indigenous perspectives in dialogue with contemporary art and distinct cultural landscapes. It may help broaden how museums present relationships between art, place and inherited knowledge.
