A large new analysis suggests that a vaccine designed to prevent shingles may also deliver an unexpected benefit for heart health years after vaccination.
Researchers examined data from about 70,000 adults in the United States and compared people who received the older shingles vaccine with those who later received the newer recombinant version, now known as Shingrix. The study found that older adults who got the newer shot had a lower rate of cardiovascular disease over time, with the clearest differences seen in ischemic heart disease, heart failure, and atrial fibrillation.
What the study observed
The comparison was especially useful because both groups had chosen to be vaccinated, which helped reduce the usual bias seen in vaccine studies. Over seven years, the recombinant-vaccine group showed a 9% lower overall cardiovascular burden. Ischemic heart disease fell by 10%, and heart failure by 12%. The researchers also noted a lower rate of abnormal heart rhythm, while the stroke signal was not consistent across the full group.
One detail stood out: the apparent protection was strongest in the first 3.5 years and then became less pronounced. That pattern suggests the effect may be tied to more than simple shingles prevention.
Why it may matter
Shingles is caused by the reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus, the same virus behind chickenpox. Beyond preventing the infection itself, the newer vaccine includes an immune-boosting ingredient called AS01. Scientists think this adjuvant may help reshape immune activity in ways that reduce inflammation, which is closely linked to cardiovascular risk.
The findings also add to growing interest in the broader effects of vaccines. Previous research has hinted that shingles vaccination may be associated with a lower risk of dementia, and flu vaccination has already shown cardiovascular benefits in some high-risk groups.
For now, the shingles vaccine remains a tool for preventing shingles, not a treatment for heart disease. Still, the study opens the door to new research on how vaccines might support long-term wellness in ways that extend beyond infection control. In the future, this line of science could help shape more integrated approaches to preventive medicine.
