In a significant move towards enhancing vehicle safety, China has implemented new regulations that affect the design of car door handles. As of January 1, 2027, all vehicles sold in the country will be required to feature mechanical releases for their door handles, effectively banning the hidden, electronically-operated designs that have gained popularity, particularly through brands like Tesla.
The newly established guidelines mandate that each door, excluding the tailgate, must be equipped with an external door handle that operates mechanically. Additionally, vehicles will need to have a mechanical release mechanism accessible from the inside. This policy aims to address safety concerns raised by incidents where occupants were unable to exit their vehicles due to failures in electronic locking systems.
China's proactive approach marks it as the first nation to enforce such regulations, responding to a series of troubling incidents involving trapped occupants. The initiative began in May 2025, with collaboration from over 40 domestic manufacturers and industry experts to create a comprehensive standard known as the Safety Technical Requirements for Automobile Door Handles.
Notably, while Tesla has been a key player in the electric vehicle market, it was not listed among the official contributors to the drafting of these new standards. The move is seen as a vital step towards ensuring the safety and accessibility of vehicles for all users, aligning with global trends in automotive safety regulations.
