Baltic Nations Unite for Ukraine at Venice Biennale

During the preview days of the 2026 Venice Biennale, the pavilions of Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia came together to host a poignant procession in support of Ukraine on May 6. This event highlighted the resilience of Ukrainian cultural figures who continue to create amidst the ongoing conflict.

The Lithuanian Pavilion articulated the purpose of the event, dedicating the procession to Ukrainian cultural workers who strive to represent their nation in challenging circumstances and honoring those who have fallen victim to the violence.

The walk commenced at the Lithuanian Pavilion located in the Fucina del Futuro, traversing to the Latvian Pavilion in the Arsenale, and concluding at the Estonian Pavilion at Patronato Salesiano Leone XIII, a former church now serving as a community hub. The entire route spanned approximately one and a half miles.

This act of solidarity is part of a broader trend of political expressions at the 2026 Biennale, which opens to the public on May 9. The event has already seen various demonstrations, including protests by Pussy Riot and FEMEN at the Russian Pavilion, and gatherings opposing Israel's participation in the Biennale.

Solvita Krese, director of the Latvian Centre for Contemporary Art and the commissioner for the Latvian Pavilion, emphasized the importance of defending freedom in the current geopolitical landscape. She raised critical questions regarding the role of cultural institutions, particularly in light of Russia's involvement in the Biennale.

As the Venice Biennale continues to unfold, the actions taken by these Baltic nations may inspire further discussions about the intersection of art and politics, reinforcing the idea that cultural expressions can serve as powerful tools for advocacy and change.
