ARTnews and Artforum, two prominent voices in the art community, have announced the launch of New York's first dedicated Art Week, aptly named Art Week NYC. This exciting initiative is set to take place from November 11 to November 14, featuring a rich array of events designed to engage art enthusiasts and the general public alike.
The four-day celebration will include a variety of activities such as public programming, neighborhood walking tours, artist discussions, and gallery openings. A notable feature will be a Midtown hub curated by ARTnews and its sister publication, Art in America, which will host dialogues with leading figures in the art sector, along with guided tours led by ARTnews editors across New York's vibrant gallery districts, from the Upper East Side to Chinatown.
Artforum will collaborate with local galleries to present openings that reflect the unique character of different neighborhoods, culminating in a day of public programming at the New Museum.
While New York has seen informal art weeks in the past, typically centered around major art fairs like Frieze and the Armory Show, this initiative aims to create a more cohesive celebration of the city's artistic landscape.
"Art is more significant to more individuals than ever before, and I'm thrilled to see Art Week energize the city and its cultural institutions," stated Sarah Douglas, Editor-in-Chief of ARTnews and Art in America. "This week will serve as a reminder that the art community is fundamentally about connection and collaboration."
Luke Bahrenburg, President of the Art and Luxury Group at Penske Media Corporation, the parent company of ARTnews and Artforum, described the event as an "unprecedented" opportunity to foster deeper conversations about art and its cultural relevance.
Danielle McConnell, Publisher of Artforum, emphasized the event's gallery-centric focus, celebrating New York as an "unparalleled ecosystem" for art. "We are immensely grateful to the galleries, museums, and cultural partners for their openness to audiences, allowing them to experience art in its most engaging forms," she remarked.
This inaugural Art Week promises to enhance the cultural fabric of New York, potentially setting a precedent for future artistic collaborations and community engagement in the arts.
