Art World Remembers a Generation of Influential Creators and Curators

The art world is reflecting on the legacies of several influential figures whose work shaped film, sculpture, curation, illustration, and collecting across continents. Their contributions continue to define how audiences experience modern and contemporary art.

Yervant Gianikian

Yervant Gianikian was known for experimental cinema created with Angela Ricci Lucchi, exploring themes ranging from colonial history to intimate memory. His films reached major institutions including the Museum of Modern Art and Tate Modern, and his work was recognized at the Venice Biennale.

Valerie Brathwaite

Valerie Brathwaite, born in Trinidad and active in Caracas, built a distinctive sculptural language inspired by landscape, plants, and wildlife. Her organic forms and drawings were matched by a parallel sound practice as a DJ, blending visual art with jazz-inflected energy.

Beth McKillop

Beth McKillop helped broaden appreciation for Korean art in Britain. At the Victoria & Albert Museum, she played a key role in establishing the first permanent Korean gallery in the United Kingdom and expanding the collection with more than 100 objects.

Jerry Moriarty

Jerry Moriarty brought a singular voice to comics and illustration through Jack Survives, while also teaching at the School of Visual Arts. His work bridged underground comics, editorial drawing, and education with a distinctive visual wit.

Sharon Dede Padi and Angela Rosengart

Sharon Dede Padi supported emerging artists through Padiki Art Gallery in Accra and earned a Guinness World Records title for a large leaf-print painting. Angela Rosengart helped preserve Modernist heritage through collecting and by founding the Sammlung Rosengart Museum in Lucerne.

Together, these careers show how artistic vision can travel across mediums, institutions, and generations, shaping the cultural landscape of the future.
