Zoox has rolled out a software update for its robotaxi fleet after one of its autonomous vehicles had difficulty navigating a smoke-filled emergency scene in June. The Amazon-owned company said the fix has been deployed across its 105-vehicle fleet.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the vehicle encountered heavy smoke near an active fire response area that had not yet been marked with cones. The robotaxi braked sharply, then stopped, before a remote operator reversed it away so first responders could secure the scene.
Zoox said it investigated the incident to identify the root cause and review whether similar situations had occurred elsewhere. The company told regulators it believes this was the only event of its kind in its operations so far and discussed the issue with NHTSA over several weeks.
The update arrives as autonomous vehicle developers place greater emphasis on first-responder awareness and real-time scene recognition. Zoox is also expanding testing in cities such as Las Vegas and San Francisco as it prepares for future commercial service.
With each software refinement, robotaxis move closer to safer, more adaptive urban mobility, shaping the next phase of autonomous transportation.
