Amazon-owned Zoox is preparing for a new growth phase in Las Vegas as a Nevada regulatory limit of 100 autonomous vehicles is set to expire on September 25.

The change gives the company greater flexibility to scale its commercial robotaxi service in the city, where it already offers paid rides. Zoox's purpose-built vehicles stand apart from conventional cars: they operate without a steering wheel, pedals or a traditional driver's seat.

A broader operating framework

The updated authorization from the Nevada Transportation Authority removes the fleet cap previously attached to Zoox's permit. While the company has not disclosed how many vehicles it plans to add, it says it intends to increase its fleet steadily in the months ahead to respond to demand in Las Vegas and other markets.

Zoox currently operates around 100 robotaxis across several US cities, including Las Vegas, San Francisco, Austin and Miami. Las Vegas remains its first market for paid passenger trips, making the city a key testing ground for the company's commercial model.

Purpose-built autonomous mobility

The company's expansion follows a temporary exemption granted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, allowing Zoox to deploy its unconventional autonomous vehicles commercially. The federal authorization covers up to 2,500 vehicles per year for two years.

Las Vegas is rapidly becoming an important center for autonomous ride-hailing. Multiple operators now hold approvals to provide commercial robotaxi services in Clark County, creating an environment where different technologies and vehicle designs can develop alongside one another.

By enabling more real-world passenger trips, Zoox's expanded operating capacity could help accelerate the evolution of driverless urban transportation, shaping how cities approach accessible, on-demand mobility in the years ahead.
