In testing as a movie-watching device, the glasses delivered a sharp and colorful picture through dual mini OLED panels with 1080p resolution and brightness reaching 1,600 nits. In a dark room, the experience can feel close to a compact home projector, with a screen size XREAL describes as equivalent to 147 inches.
Still, the a01 is built around convenience more than independence. It mirrors content from the connected device, which means the source screen must stay active during playback. That makes the setup feel more like a portable viewing extension than a fully separate cinema experience.
The glasses can also pair with a phone, though compatibility depends on the device and may require an adapter. For users who want a more self-contained option, XREAL offers the Beam Pro, a separate mini-tablet that stores and streams content before sending it to the glasses. That adds flexibility, but also extra cost.
Comfort is another part of the story. The a01 is relatively light, yet extended use can create warmth around the nose bridge and eyes, a common challenge in compact XR hardware. Even so, the device is noticeably less bulky than some other smart glasses on the market.
XREAL is already moving toward its next step with Project Aura, a future model built on Android XR with hand tracking, Google Play access, and a pocket-sized compute puck. The direction suggests that wearable displays are evolving from novelty toward more practical everyday media tools, shaping how people may watch and interact with content in the years ahead.
