World Labs has secured a $200 million investment from Autodesk to integrate AI-driven 3D models into design workflows, enhancing creativity in entertainment and beyond.

World Labs Secures $200 Million Investment from Autodesk to Enhance 3D Workflows

World Labs, founded by Fei-Fei Li, has successfully garnered a substantial $200 million investment from Autodesk, a leader in software design. This collaboration aims to integrate World Labs' innovative AI models--capable of generating and reasoning about immersive 3D environments--into Autodesk's existing tools, initially targeting the entertainment sector.

This investment is a segment of a broader funding initiative for World Labs, which previously emerged from stealth mode in 2024 with $230 million in funding, achieving a valuation of $1 billion. Reports indicate that the company is now in discussions to raise further capital at a valuation of $5 billion.

Autodesk's backing signals strong commercial potential for World Labs' offerings. The startup's flagship product, Marble, launched last November, allows users to create customizable and downloadable 3D environments.

As a major player in 3D CAD (computer-aided design) software development, Autodesk's investment in advanced spatial AI aligns seamlessly with its core business, which encompasses architecture, engineering, construction, and entertainment sectors. Fei-Fei Li emphasized the shared vision between the two companies, stating, "Autodesk has long helped people think spatially and solve real-world problems," highlighting the goal of enhancing human creativity through AI.

Under this partnership, Autodesk will also act as a consultant to World Labs, facilitating collaboration at the research and model development stages. Daron Green, Autodesk's chief scientist, noted that while the partnership is still in its infancy, they foresee potential for mutual integration of models in various applications.

Green explained that customers may utilize a world-model-based sketch from World Labs, such as an office layout, and refine specific design elements using Autodesk's technology. Conversely, users could take a designed object from Autodesk's platform and place it within a context generated by World Labs.

The initial focus of their joint efforts will be on media and entertainment, with both companies recognizing the growing interest in gaming and interactive entertainment as vital markets. Autodesk already collaborates with leading media production firms and has been developing models for character animation, which closely relate to world models.

Green pointed out that these models incorporate physical dynamics, allowing for a deeper interaction within their created environments. This partnership is part of Autodesk's broader strategy to enhance AI capabilities across its software suite, including the development of "neural CAD," a generative AI model designed to create functional 3D models based on geometric data.

By integrating World Labs' models, Autodesk aims to extend its capabilities beyond isolated design files, fostering holistic digital representations of the physical world. Green anticipates that the combination of various AI systems, including world models and large language models, will significantly enhance design processes for Autodesk's clientele.

Li concluded with a forward-looking statement: "If AI is to be truly useful, it must understand worlds, not just words," emphasizing the importance of comprehending geometry, physics, and dynamics in the evolution of AI.
