Microsoft is poised to enhance the functionality of Windows 11, allowing users to seamlessly resume Android applications on their PCs. Initially launched last year, this cross-device resumption feature enabled users to continue OneDrive sessions from their Android devices on a Windows 11 PC. The latest updates will now extend this capability to include Spotify playback, web browsing sessions, and more.
The updated cross-device resume feature has been undergoing testing since August and is part of the recent Release Preview update for Windows 11, which began rolling out yesterday. This enhancement allows users to pick up Spotify playback from their phones on their PCs, as well as continue working on documents in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Additionally, users can resume their Edge browsing sessions from their mobile devices on their PCs.
This feature closely resembles Apple's Handoff on macOS, which facilitates task continuity across various Apple devices. Microsoft first unveiled its cross-device resume functionality at last year's Build developer conference. While Windows 10 had its own version of app handoff, known as Project Rome, it did not gain significant traction among developers.
The inclusion of this feature in the Release Preview indicates that it will be available soon. The update also introduces enhanced MIDI 2.0 support, improvements in voice typing, and fingerprint sensor support for Windows Hello Enhanced Sign-in Security (ESS). For users with a Copilot Plus PC, the update will enable the new Settings Agent to support multiple languages, including German, Portuguese, Spanish, Korean, Japanese, Hindi, Italian, and Simplified Chinese.
