Whitney Museum Staff Approve New Contract Ahead of Roy Lichtenstein Exhibition

Staff represented by the Whitney Museum Union have ratified a new labor agreement with the Whitney Museum of American Art, concluding negotiations ahead of the opening of the museum's upcoming Roy Lichtenstein retrospective, Like New.

The four-year agreement introduces salary increases of at least 14.75% across covered roles. It also establishes a new $26 hourly wage floor for visitor experience, membership and retail associates, with scheduled increases applying over the course of the contract.

Beyond compensation, the contract includes new longevity bonuses for employees with ten or more years of service, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave, expanded bereavement leave and enhanced health and safety provisions.

The agreement reflects a broader period of contract progress among museum employees in New York City. For the Whitney, it creates a clearer framework for workplace support while allowing the institution to focus on its public programming and visitor experience.

As cultural institutions continue to evolve, agreements that strengthen staff development and long-term stability may help shape more sustainable, people-centered museum ecosystems.
