TikTok has encountered significant challenges recently, especially after its transition to a new ownership structure known as the "TikTok USDS Joint Venture," which is predominantly American-owned. This shift has led to various disruptions, including a notable outage attributed to issues at a data center. Users have expressed concerns regarding new terms of service that appear to enhance tracking capabilities, limit certain types of content, and potentially "shadowban" posts from users.
In light of these developments, many users are seeking alternatives, with a noticeable shift towards a relatively new platform called UpScrolled. This app has quickly risen to become the second most popular free application on the iOS App Store, reminiscent of the migration of X users to Bluesky.
What is UpScrolled?
UpScrolled, launched by Issam Hijazi in June, aims to provide a space where users can freely express their opinions without the fear of bias or restrictive algorithms. The platform's mission is to ensure that every post receives equal visibility, contrasting sharply with the perceived biases of TikTok's algorithm.
The platform only restricts content that violates its community guidelines, which include illegal activities, hate speech, and other harmful content. Notably, UpScrolled promises transparency, informing users if their content is removed or if their account faces any penalties.
A key feature that distinguishes UpScrolled from its competitors is its algorithm, which separates user feeds into two distinct sections: the Following Feed, displaying posts in chronological order from users you follow, and the Discover Feed, which showcases popular posts based on engagement metrics rather than aggressive personalization. This approach allows users to explore content without the pressure of tailored algorithms.
Moreover, UpScrolled takes a strong stance on user privacy, stating that it does not sell user data to third parties and only shares information when legally required, setting it apart from many other social media platforms.
Using UpScrolled
While my exploration of UpScrolled is still in its early stages, I created an account to delve into its offerings. The suggested accounts to follow were unfamiliar, indicating that discovering content may require some exploration.
The Discover Feed features a diverse array of content, with a noticeable emphasis on current events, including discussions surrounding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Many users have turned to UpScrolled as a platform for pro-Palestinian content, responding to claims of censorship on mainstream social media. However, the app also promotes a variety of content categories, such as sports, news, entertainment, and technology.
Despite some posts being adapted from TikTok, UpScrolled offers a mix of static images and videos, reminiscent of Instagram's style. This variety seems to resonate with former TikTok users, who are more focused on expressing their sentiments towards the platform they once frequented.
While my initial experience with UpScrolled may not have fully captivated me, it presents a fresh perspective on social media. Time will tell whether its popularity will sustain or if users will revert to TikTok.
