Biotech startup Vivodyne says the next leap in AI-driven drug discovery will not come from bigger models alone, but from better biological data. The company argues that current systems are limited because they learn from static snapshots, animal studies, or isolated cells rather than living human tissue.

To address that gap, Vivodyne has developed HIVE, a modular robotic lab platform that can grow 20 types of human tissue and automatically test them with different compounds. The goal is to generate causal data that shows how tissue changes over time, giving AI models a more realistic view of human biology.

Founded as a spinout from the University of Pennsylvania in 2021, the company says its tissue models have shown strong predictive performance in toxicity and drug-response testing. Vivodyne also says its new facility near San Francisco is designed to scale experiments far beyond traditional lab workflows.

The startup has raised nearly $80 million and is working with major pharmaceutical companies, though it has not disclosed names. Its broader ambition is to help build AI systems that understand not just biological states, but the causes behind them -- a shift that could make drug development more precise and efficient.

If that vision holds, human tissue labs may become a key bridge between AI and medicine, shaping a future where discovery is faster, smarter, and more biologically grounded.
