The United States is drawing firmer lines around advanced drones and robotics, with new import limits and tariffs aimed at foreign-made systems. The latest measures, set to roll out from September and into 2027, reflect a broader push to protect strategic technology supply chains.

At the center of this shift is the FCC's Covered List, created in 2021 and first focused on telecom and surveillance equipment. It has since expanded to include foreign-made drones and, more recently, advanced robotic devices.

The timing matters: Chinese manufacturers have built a powerful lead in both drones and humanoid robots, combining high-volume production with aggressive pricing. According to Counterpoint Research, global humanoid robot shipments reached 22,000 units in the first half of the year, with Chinese companies accounting for the vast majority. The top five shipment leaders were all based in China.

Industry experts say the real story is not a simple split between two markets, but a more regional robotics landscape. The U.S. is likely to remain strong in frontier AI, software and semiconductor innovation, while China continues to dominate manufacturing scale, supply-chain depth and cost efficiency.

That advantage can reinforce itself: lower prices help robots spread faster, wider deployment creates more operational data, and higher output can drive costs down even further. Chinese firms are also bringing more components in-house and drawing on the country's broader industrial base to speed development.

As access to the U.S. market narrows, Chinese robotics companies may expand more actively across Europe, Southeast Asia, Latin America and the Middle East. Meanwhile, U.S. and allied makers are expected to focus on security-sensitive areas such as defense, critical infrastructure and long-range autonomous systems.

In the near future, the competition may center less on the robots themselves and more on batteries, payload systems and production ecosystems. The result could be a more diverse global robotics map, where regional strengths define the next wave of automation.
