China Welcomes Return of 64 Cultural Treasures, From Buddhist Sculptures to Dinosaur Fossils

A collection of 64 cultural objects, including ancient Buddhist sculptures, terracotta figures and prehistoric fossils, has been returned to China through coordinated heritage-protection efforts in the United States.

The group includes 58 objects transferred in Washington, D.C., followed by six bronze works returned separately in New York. Among the most distinctive pieces are two Buddha sculptures, terracotta horseman figures, fossilized dinosaur eggs and a complete Psittacosaurus skeleton.

The small herbivorous dinosaur, recognized for its beak-like features, offers valuable insight into prehistoric life. The returned collection also includes a Buddha sculpture originating from the Tianlongshan Grottoes, an important temple complex in Shanxi Province.

Heritage Preservation Through International Cooperation

Multiple offices of Homeland Security Investigations collaborated with U.S. cultural and customs institutions to identify and recover the objects. The initiative reflects a growing international focus on safeguarding archaeological materials, historical artworks and scientific specimens for public study and cultural continuity.

The return of these works brings artistic, archaeological and natural-history treasures closer to their original cultural context. Such cooperation can help shape a future in which shared heritage is preserved, researched and appreciated across generations.
