U.S. Exemption Eases a Key Hurdle for Self-Driving Trucks

The U.S. Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has granted Aurora Innovation, Kodiak AI and other autonomous trucking developers a five-year exemption from a rule requiring drivers to place reflective warning triangles behind a stopped truck.

Because driverless vehicles have no person on board to set out the devices, the requirement had posed a practical challenge for companies aiming to expand commercial operations. Under the exemption, autonomous trucks may use cab-mounted warning beacons to alert nearby road users instead.

The change offers a defined alternative for roadside warnings while autonomous freight technology develops. If the approach proves effective, it could inform how safety standards adapt to driverless vehicles and shape the future of freight movement.
