Unrealized Artwork by Christo and Jeanne-Claude to Debut at Gagosian London

The renowned Gagosian gallery in London is set to showcase a groundbreaking artwork envisioned by Christo and Jeanne-Claude back in 1968, which remained unrealized until now, following the passing of Jeanne-Claude in 2009 and Christo in 2020.

The exhibition titled "Christo: Air" will open its doors on May 21 and run until August 21. It will not only present rare pieces by Christo but also feature the intriguing Air Package on a Ceiling. This particular piece was initially intended for the Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia but was never completed due to technical challenges. According to the gallery's press release, the artwork is described as a "vast, internally illuminated and suspended form," spanning approximately 32 by 52 feet, hovering just above the heads of the gallery's visitors.

Lorenza Giovanelli, who began her role as Christo's studio manager in 2017, expressed her excitement about the upcoming exhibition. She noted, "It will look like a beautiful cloud, lit from within, hanging from the ceiling of the gallery space. It will be very magical ... I've imagined this many times. So I am really impatient to see it." Giovanelli believes that attendees will find the piece extraordinarily beautiful.

In 2018, Giovanelli discovered the original plans for Air Package on a Ceiling, just two years prior to Christo's passing at the age of 84. The plans included a detailed scale model that illustrated the work in a gallery setting, complete with electrical wiring to demonstrate its lighting features.

Additionally, the exhibition will showcase other notable works, including Wrapped Automobile--Volvo, Model PV-544 (1981), a wrapped car that has not been displayed for three decades, further emphasizing Christo's iconic wrapping technique.

This exhibition not only honors the legacy of Christo and Jeanne-Claude but also invites contemporary audiences to engage with their visionary concepts, potentially inspiring future generations of artists and art lovers alike.
