Three Key Highlights for February 16, 2026

1. Grain and Soybean Trading Paused for Presidents Day

Today marks a pause in grain and soybean trading as the market observes Presidents Day.

Trading activities will resume with the overnight session following the holiday.

2. Increase in Soybean Net-Long Positions

Recent data from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission indicates that investors have increased their net-long positions in soybeans, reflecting a bullish sentiment. Meanwhile, bearish positions on corn have decreased.

As of February 10, speculators were net long on 115,896 soybean futures contracts, a significant rise from 29,153 contracts the previous week. This represents the most robust bullish stance for soybeans since mid-December.

Conversely, money managers reported a net short position of 57,493 contracts in corn, a reduction from 80,613 contracts the previous week, marking the smallest bearish position since early January.

In the wheat market, investors held a net short position of 85,832 soft-red winter contracts, an increase from the previous week.

Notably, hedge funds have also raised their bearish bets on hard-red winter wheat, expanding their net-short position to 18,012 futures from 7,777 contracts the week before, the largest bearish stance since late December.

3. Weather Warnings for the Southern Plains

This morning's weather reports show a mix of dry conditions in the Southern Plains and winter storm watches in northern regions.

Red flag warnings have been issued for areas including eastern Colorado, western Kansas, eastern New Mexico, and parts of the Oklahoma and Texas panhandles, as reported by the National Weather Service.

Forecasts indicate sustained winds of 30 to 40 mph with gusts reaching up to 65 mph in southwestern Kansas starting tomorrow, along with a drop in relative humidity to as low as 10%.

In the Texas panhandle, winds are expected to be similar, with gusts up to 70 mph and humidity levels around 14%. The National Weather Service cautions that any fires that occur may spread rapidly.

Additionally, heavy snow is anticipated in parts of northern North Dakota and Minnesota, with over 6 inches possible and winds up to 35 mph expected, which may lead to reduced visibility due to blowing snow.
