The Museum at FIT Unveils "Art X Fashion" Exhibition

The Museum at FIT (MFIT) is excited to announce the launch of "Art X Fashion", an insightful exhibition that delves into the captivating interplay between fashion and fine art. Featuring over 140 pieces, including garments, accessories, textiles, photographs, and artworks from the museum's extensive collection, this exhibition aims to redefine the conventional boundaries of visual culture by presenting fashion and art as equally significant expressions of societal, intellectual, and creative dynamics. Curated by Dr. Elizabeth Way, the exhibition will be open from February 18 to April 19, 2026.

"Art X Fashion" prompts attendees to ponder a thought-provoking question: "Is fashion art?" Drawing upon the theoretical insights of art and fashion historian Dr. Christopher Richards, the exhibition highlights the historical collaboration between fashion and fine art, spanning from the elegance of Rococo and Neoclassicism to the audacious innovations of Surrealism, Pop Art, and postmodernism. Richards asserts that the creativity, craftsmanship, and cultural influence of fashion qualify it as a form of art, with notable designers such as Martin Margiela, Rei Kawakubo, and Christian Dior exemplifying this connection.

The exhibition also investigates how artists utilize fashion as a medium of expression. Works by renowned figures like Salvador Dalí, Pablo Picasso, and Sonia Delaunay illustrate how artistic vision influences design. Contemporary artists such as Kerry James Marshall and Tavares Strachan further explore the fluid boundaries between these realms. Historical representations, including artist-flâneurs captured by Manet and Degas, reveal how fashion conveyed modernity and artistic identity during the 19th century.

"Art X Fashion" will also highlight how designers draw inspiration from fine art, showcasing how artistic aesthetics are reinterpreted in fashion. Examples include Yves Saint Laurent's iconic Mondrian dresses and Eric Gaskins' innovative beadwork. Collaborations among designers like Gianni Versace and Louis Vuitton illustrate the fusion of luxury, culture, and artistic practice.

By exploring these connections, "Art X Fashion" seeks to underscore the enduring dialogue between fashion and art, as well as its cultural importance. "Regardless of whether one considers fashion to be art, its profound relationship with fine art is unmistakable," stated Way.

Accompanying the exhibition is the "Art X Fashion" Symposium on March 27, which will feature discussions with designers, curators, and artists on the intertwined histories of fashion and art.

The Museum at FIT, recognized by the American Alliance of Museums, is New York City's sole museum dedicated exclusively to fashion. With a collection exceeding 50,000 garments and accessories, its mission is to promote understanding and appreciation of fashion as a vital cultural force.
