Met Gala 2026 Dress Code Announced: 'Fashion is Art'

The Met Gala 2026 will embrace the theme "Fashion is Art," celebrating the intersection of fashion and the human body in a spectacular showcase of creativity.

Met Gala 2026 Dress Code Announced: 'Fashion is Art'

Last November, the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art unveiled the theme for this year's Met Gala: "Costume Art." This expansive concept connects the museum's extensive collection, which spans five millennia, with the art of dressing, emphasizing the relationship between fashion and the body. The newly announced dress code aligns perfectly with this theme, encapsulating the essence of the event with the phrase: "Fashion is Art."

Andrew Bolton, the curator of the Costume Institute, highlighted the growing recognition of fashion as a legitimate art form. He noted, "Over the last two decades, fashion has increasingly gained acceptance as a subject worthy of the same serious contemplation as traditional arts like painting and sculpture." However, he pointed out that this acceptance has often required fashion to distance itself from its connection to the human body.

This year's gala promises to be a remarkable showcase, featuring approximately 400 objects that juxtapose couture designs with various artworks and artifacts. The exhibition will inaugurate the new Condé M. Nast Galleries, located next to the Great Hall of the museum.

The co-chairs for the 2026 Met Gala include an impressive lineup: Beyoncé, Nicole Kidman, Venus Williams, and Anna Wintour. The Gala Host Committee, co-chaired by Anthony Vaccarello and Zoë Kravitz, also features notable members such as Sabrina Carpenter, Doja Cat, Gwendoline Christie, Alex Consani, and Misty Copeland.

This year's exhibition is organized around a "typology of bodies," categorized into three main groups, from classical nudes to less commonly represented forms, such as pregnant and aging bodies. The dress code encourages attendees to view the body as a source of inspiration, promising a diverse array of styles and shapes in May.

Bolton expressed, "Costume art is a celebration of the body in all of its strengths and weaknesses, its resiliencies and vulnerabilities, its perfections and imperfections, its idiosyncrasies and commonalities, its sublime beauty, its wondrous complexity, its glorious and miraculous diversity."

The Met Gala, held annually on the first Monday of May, supports the Costume Institute, which houses around 33,000 objects representing seven centuries of fashion history. Invitations are exclusive, with individual tickets priced as high as $50,000.
