Cat Johnston, a London-based illustrator and model maker, brings to life a captivating array of characters, including a fashionable bat and a wistful sun. Her work draws inspiration from childhood memories, folk art, and the beauty of nature, resulting in expressive sculptures and puppets that transport viewers to dreamlike realms.
Johnston's creations feature a delightful mix of historical costumes and cartoonish expressions, creating a sense of familiarity intertwined with the fantastical. Her recent series introduces gods that embody sunburn, hay fever, and insomnia, cleverly represented by the sun, flowers, and the moon.
In an exciting new venture, Johnston collaborated with stop-motion animator Joseph Wallace on her first short film, titled "The Wickywock and the Jubjub Berry." This enchanting tale follows a mythical woodland creature grappling with sleeplessness, as a forest sprite offers a seemingly practical solution that leads to unexpected outcomes.
Aligned with the local pagan festival, Hastings Traditional Jack in the Green, which takes place the first weekend of May, Johnston will showcase her work in a solo exhibition at The Crown pub. Additionally, she has joined forces with the London-based cinematic studio Passion Pictures as a director, further expanding her exploration of film.
Currently, Johnston is developing ideas for animated series and is eager to embark on a longer stop-motion project. She also has plans for another short film that promises to blend live-action puppetry with stop-motion animation, featuring two whimsical flowery monsters and an adorable bee.
