Tesla is preparing to invest in a large-scale solar panel manufacturing facility in Texas, with filings pointing to a site about 45 minutes southwest of Houston. Internally known as Project Crystal Sun, the initiative signals a new step in the company's clean-energy roadmap.
The proposed plant could require up to $10.1 billion in investment. Tesla has also applied for tax incentives while noting that it is evaluating locations in several U.S. states. According to the filing, the project is expected to generate around 9,700 full-time jobs, adding significant industrial capacity to the region.
Company estimates suggest the property tax burden could reach roughly $1.1 billion over 37 years without incentives. Tesla aims to begin construction this year, complete the facility by 2028, and start producing solar panels in 2029.
The filings do not specify whether the panels will be used on Earth or for space-related applications. Still, the move fits Tesla's broader ambition to expand U.S. manufacturing capacity and strengthen its position in the solar energy sector. If realized, the project could help shape the next phase of large-scale renewable production.
