Bill Gates-backed TerraPower is preparing to expand its role in the energy transition with a new project aimed at the fast-growing AI infrastructure market. The company is expected to announce its first data center-focused initiative this year, while its initial reactor project is already under construction in Wyoming.
Unlike conventional power systems, AI facilities need electricity that can respond to sharp changes in demand. TerraPower's answer is a 345-megawatt molten salt-cooled reactor designed with built-in energy storage. Instead of constantly adjusting reactor output, the system keeps producing heat and stores the excess in molten sodium, then releases that energy when demand rises.
This approach is important because nuclear plants are most efficient when they operate steadily at high capacity. By combining that strength with storage flexibility, TerraPower aims to support both renewable-heavy grids and data centers that require reliable, adaptable power.
The company's model also reflects a broader shift in clean energy strategy: not just generating electricity, but shaping how it is delivered across changing workloads.
