Sweden's government has reported an attempted cyberattack on one of its thermal power plants, allegedly orchestrated by hackers linked to the Russian government. Although the attack was thwarted, officials warn that hybrid threats, which combine cyber and physical elements, are becoming increasingly perilous.
During a press conference, Carl-Oskar Bohlin, Sweden's Minister of Civil Defense, revealed that the incident occurred in early 2025. He attributed the attempted disruption to hackers associated with Russian intelligence services.
Bohlin noted that groups previously engaged in denial-of-service attacks are now escalating their efforts to conduct destructive cyber operations against European entities. "This shift indicates a more aggressive and reckless approach by these hackers," he stated.
While the specific plant targeted was not disclosed, Bohlin emphasized that built-in protective measures successfully blocked the attack. This incident underscores the evolving landscape of cybersecurity threats, particularly against critical infrastructure.
The Swedish government's announcement follows a trend of similar attacks attributed to Russian hackers, who have increasingly targeted energy and water systems across Europe with the intent to disrupt essential public services. Earlier incidents include an attempted power grid disruption in Poland and a brief hijacking of a dam in Norway, which resulted in uncontrolled water release.
In January 2024, a cyberattack on a municipal energy company in Lviv, Ukraine, left hundreds of apartments without heat during freezing temperatures, further illustrating the real-world implications of such cyber threats.
