Steve Buscemi's Approach to Making Every Role Memorable

Steve Buscemi explains how close attention to character, collaboration and creative detail help him make supporting roles stand out in Martin McDonagh's Wild Horse Nine.

Steve Buscemi's Approach to Making Every Role Memorable

For Steve Buscemi, a character's impact is not measured by how long they appear on screen. His focus is on making each role feel complete and connected to the story, whether he is leading a project or joining an ensemble.

In Wild Horse Nine, directed by Martin McDonagh, Buscemi plays MJ, a sharply dressed, ambitious and morally complicated figure. The film also stars John Malkovich and Sam Rockwell, with the story unfolding partly on Rapa Nui, also known as Easter Island.

Buscemi says compelling writing, strong direction and distinctive characters draw him to a project. He approached MJ by imagining the character's confidence and ambition, with his striking wardrobe helping shape that impression. Finding a more vulnerable dimension beneath the polished exterior, he says, made the role feel more human.

His guiding principle is to give full attention to the part he is playing, regardless of its size. That perspective echoes filmmaker Frank Capra's belief that every character in a film can carry the potential for a story of their own.

Buscemi also values the collaborative energy of ensemble productions. His long-standing friendship with Rockwell and his respect for Malkovich helped create an ease on set, while filming on Rapa Nui brought the cast together beyond their scenes. The island's landscape and history, he says, helped inform the work.

With a career spanning independent films, studio productions, comedy and television--including Boardwalk Empire--Buscemi has deliberately avoided being defined by one genre. His latest role reflects a lasting creative idea: a small part can leave a substantial impression when played with care. That approach continues to show how thoughtful character work can enrich ensemble storytelling for audiences.
