Stability AI Unveils Advanced Audio Model Capable of Creating Six-Minute Songs

Stability AI, renowned for its innovation with Stable Diffusion, has launched a groundbreaking series of audio models named Stability Audio 3.0. This latest iteration boasts the ability to generate professional-quality music tracks lasting over six minutes, marking a significant advancement in audio technology.

The new lineup includes four models: small SFX (459M parameters), small (459M parameters), medium (1.4B parameters), and large (2.7B parameters). The smaller models are tailored for on-device sound and music generation, supporting compositions of up to two minutes in length.

In contrast, the medium and large models can produce full musical pieces lasting up to 6 minutes and 20 seconds, maintaining structural integrity and melodic coherence--an impressive leap from the capabilities of Stable Audio 2.0, which was released in 2024 and could only generate tracks up to 47 seconds long.

Stability AI is democratizing access to music creation by offering the small SFX, small, and medium models with open weights, allowing users to modify and utilize them freely. This move represents a significant enhancement over previous open-source models.

The large model, however, is exclusively available through API and paid self-hosting services. Companies with annual revenues exceeding $1 million will need to acquire an enterprise license to access it.

As the landscape of music generation evolves, numerous companies, including Google and ElevenLabs, are also developing their own models and tools. However, ongoing legal disputes regarding data licensing, as evidenced by cases involving Suno and Udio, highlight the importance of securing partnerships with music labels for the sustainability of these services.

Stability AI has already forged alliances with major players like Warner Music Group and Universal Music Group to create models and tools for music production, ensuring that its audio models utilize fully licensed data.

The company is also venturing into a new range of products aimed at professional musicians, although specific details remain under wraps. Notably, Ethan Kaplan, the former chief digital officer at Universal Audio and Fender, is set to lead this initiative.

As AI continues to reshape the music industry, the hiring of music executives by various AI companies underscores a commitment to integrating expertise into their offerings. This trend may pave the way for innovative collaborations and advancements in music technology.

With these developments, the future of music creation is poised for transformation, enabling artists to explore new creative horizons while leveraging cutting-edge technology.
