On Tuesday, Snapchat unveiled its latest innovation, AI Clips, within Lens Studio--its platform dedicated to the creation and distribution of augmented reality (AR) and artificial intelligence (AI) effects known as Lenses. This new feature allows users to convert a single photograph into a captivating five-second video.
In contrast to open-ended text-to-video applications, AI Clips offer a structured experience. Lens creators can design unique Lenses, enabling users to generate videos from their own images simply by tapping on the Lens.
For instance, a Lens creator might develop a feature that enables users to create a video of themselves striding down a red carpet using their personal photo.
Snapchat emphasizes that both novice and seasoned developers can harness this new Lens format to swiftly transform a single prompt into a published Lens, all within minutes and without the need for additional tools.
Accessible to users subscribed to Snapchat's Lens+ service, priced at $8.99 monthly, AI Clips provide exclusive access to unique Lenses and enhanced AR experiences, complementing the benefits of the standard Snapchat+ subscription.
"For the first time, developers can build and publish photo-to-video AI directly to Snapchat from the GenAI Suite in Lens Studio," Snapchat stated in a press release. "Currently, there is no other service that merges closed-prompt AI video creation with direct photo input, effective distribution, and monetization."
Creators enrolled in Lens+ Payouts, Snapchat's monetization initiative, have the opportunity to generate income from the AI Clips they produce.
Snapchat is not alone in this realm; YouTube recently announced a similar feature called "Reimagine," allowing users to transform a single frame from an existing YouTube Short into an 8-second clip using their own images.
The launch of AI Clips coincides with Snapchat's announcement that users generated nearly two trillion Snaps, averaging 63,000 Snaps per second, in 2025.
