Snap Advances Towards Launching New AI Glasses After Extended Hiatus

Snap Inc. has partnered with Qualcomm to reinvigorate its augmented reality (AR) glasses initiative, known as Specs, as it gears up for a much-anticipated release later this year. This collaboration marks a significant step forward for the project, which has been in the works for over a decade.

The company has been hinting at the arrival of the new Specs for some time now. Earlier this year, Snap established a dedicated subsidiary to focus on this venture, indicating its commitment to making AR technology more accessible. However, the journey has not been without challenges, as Snap recently experienced a leadership shakeup that saw the departure of Scott Myers, the former Senior Vice President of Specs.

The partnership with Qualcomm is expected to breathe new life into the project. Specs will utilize Qualcomm's Snapdragon XR platforms, which are specifically engineered for augmented and virtual reality applications. This strategic alliance aims to deliver groundbreaking on-device AI, stunning graphics, and innovative multiuser digital experiences, according to a recent press release.

Snap's CEO, Evan Spiegel, expressed optimism about the collaboration, stating, "Our work with Qualcomm provides a strong foundation for the future of Specs, bringing developers and consumers advanced technology and performance that pushes the boundaries of what's possible."

Specs has evolved significantly since its inception, with the last consumer version released in 2019. Since then, the focus has shifted towards developing a product aimed primarily at developers, allowing Snap to cultivate new applications and experiences that will attract users upon the glasses' launch.

As Snap prepares to unveil this innovative device, the collaboration with Qualcomm could redefine how users interact with augmented reality, potentially setting new standards for wearable technology in the years to come.
