Qualcomm Bets on the Next Computing Era with AI Wearables and Mixed Reality Chips

Qualcomm is expanding its vision beyond smartphones, aiming to power the next generation of AI wearables and immersive devices. The company says it is already working on more than 40 concepts, including smart jewelry, camera-equipped earbuds, pins, and watches.

To support that shift, Qualcomm introduced two new platforms. The first, Snapdragon Reality Elite, is built for mixed reality glasses and is designed to deliver stronger on-device AI performance. The second, called START (Scalable Turnkey AI-Ready Toolkit), combines hardware modules, software, and companion tools to help device makers bring AI glasses to market faster.

According to Qualcomm, Snapdragon Reality Elite offers up to 60% better GPU performance, up to 30% higher CPU performance, and up to 160% stronger NPU performance compared with its previous XR platform. The company also says it can run a 3-billion-parameter language model at 45 tokens per second, supporting faster and more natural AI interactions.

The platform is designed for two main device types: standalone video-see-through headsets and lightweight optical-see-through glasses. Qualcomm also says it improves head and hand tracking while supporting sharper visuals at 4.4K per eye and 90 frames per second.

START is aimed at simplifying development for manufacturers. Through its white-label program, Qualcomm is offering reference designs that include an audio-and-camera model, a monocular display, and a binocular display. Early partners include eyewear makers Inspecs and O'Neill.

With these launches, Qualcomm is positioning itself as a core technology provider for devices that could define the post-smartphone era. The company's strategy suggests a future where wearable computing becomes more personal, more contextual, and more connected to the world around us.
