Serpentine is expanding its technology-focused vision with the launch of the Future Art Ecosystems R&D Fellowship, a new program designed to bring artists and emerging AI systems into closer dialogue.
The six-month fellowship will begin in London this month and selected four participants from nearly 1,000 applicants. Each receives a £10,000 grant, along with online learning, specialist mentorship, workshops, and in-person sessions in London.
The inaugural cohort includes artists Alice Bucknell, Alfredo Salazar-Caro, and Auriea Harvey, plus designer and researcher Reina Mun. The initiative has been developed since 2019 in partnership with the Glass Castle Foundation, and the collaboration also includes a major annual commission.
Serpentine CEO Bettina Korek said the fellowship is meant to create a stronger link between art and emerging technology so both can evolve together. The jury brought together voices from art, science, business, and research, including Refik Anadol, Cao Fei, Holly Herndon, Lila Ibrahim, Mariana Mazzucato, Venkatesh Rao, Suneil Setiya, and Evan Spiegel.
With programs like this, cultural institutions are helping shape a future where creativity and intelligent systems develop side by side.
