Roku has introduced Roku Labs, a new space within Roku OS where U.S. users can explore experimental apps developed by the company. Available through a dedicated Home Screen tile, the hub brings early-stage interactive experiences directly to the television.
First experiments: utility meets play
The initial Roku Labs lineup includes apps for weather and stock tracking, alongside Roku Dash, a casual game set in the colorful world of Roku City. Players guide a UFO through the platform's familiar digital skyline, extending Roku's interface beyond streaming into lightweight entertainment.
The initiative signals a broader focus on first-party experiences that can make connected TVs more useful throughout the day. By testing new services in a visible, accessible space, Roku can refine features based on how households engage with them.
A wider update for connected homes
The latest update also expands Roku's personalized Home Screen to Mexico and Brazil, with localized discovery tools and recommendations. Roku Voice is gaining the ability to respond to weather-related questions, adding another practical layer to everyday viewing.
In the U.S. and Mexico, Roku is also preparing flexible subscription bundles for select streaming services, allowing viewers to combine plans in a single offering. Meanwhile, the company is open-sourcing Roku LT OS, the software behind its remote controls, potentially enabling developers and makers to create compatible devices and new applications.
