Refik Anadol has transformed the Smithsonian's historic Castle in Washington, D.C., with a two-night AI-powered light and sound installation titled Smithsonian Dreams. Projected across the building's red sandstone façade, the work created an immersive public experience during a short pause in the site's long renovation process.

The installation ran for two hours each evening on Friday and Saturday, drawing an estimated 20,000 visitors to the National Mall. Anadol's project used generative AI to reinterpret nearly two centuries of digitized material from the Smithsonian's collections, including manuscripts, photographs, artworks, scientific records, and specimens.

Built with a custom visualization system, the piece converted archival data into shifting color fields and dynamic motion, linking memory, research, and imagination in one large-scale public artwork. The concept reflects Anadol's broader approach: treating data as a creative material capable of revealing new forms of cultural expression.

With Smithsonian Dreams, the Castle became more than a landmark; it became a responsive surface for digital storytelling and collective reflection. The project highlights how museums and new technologies can work together to expand access to heritage in fresh, emotionally resonant ways.
