As a marathon runner, I'm teaming up with my colleague, a weightlifter, to tackle the exciting challenge of a Hyrox doubles race on May 29. This collaboration is an experiment to see how minimal training can yield results in this unique fitness competition.
For those unfamiliar, Hyrox is a rapidly growing fitness event that combines running and functional fitness exercises. Unlike CrossFit, Hyrox features a standardized format, consisting of eight kilometers of running divided into eight one-kilometer segments, each followed by a specific fitness station. The stations include SkiErg, sled push, sled pull, burpee broad jumps, rowing, farmers carry, sandbag lunges, and wall balls, all completed in a timed manner.
In the doubles format, my partner and I will run together but can distribute the functional stations as needed. I feel fortunate to benefit from my partner's strength during the more demanding tasks, although we both must run the same distance.
My Strengths Going into Hyrox
Currently, my cardio fitness is at a solid half-marathon level, which is a significant advantage for this race. My experience in marathon training has equipped me with the mental resilience to push through discomfort, a crucial skill for the challenges that lie ahead.
My Weaknesses Going into Hyrox
Conversely, my main challenge is strength training. My current resistance workouts are inconsistent, making me apprehensive about the sled push and pull stations. If I struggle early on, it could hinder my performance in the subsequent running and functional exercises.
Additionally, I'm aware that technique and efficiency will be crucial to avoid injuries, especially under fatigue. Although I've attended one Hyrox-specific class, I'm eager to refine my skills in the weeks leading up to the event.
How I'm Training for Hyrox
With less than a month until race day, my focus is on improving my technique rather than building strength. I plan to spend more time practicing with a sandbag and sled to enhance my form. I'm also utilizing Hyrox training modes available on fitness watches to supplement my preparation.
The Bottom Line
Having my weightlifting partner gives me confidence, but I am slightly concerned about her endurance for the running segments. In the doubles format, while we can alternate, there are limits to how much we can support each other.
On May 29, we'll either discover the surprising ease of navigating a Hyrox race with minimal preparation or learn the hard way about the demands of this competition. Regardless of the outcome, it promises to be an unforgettable experience.
